Close to Home—and then some, 9/30–10/31

Close to Home ~ and then some is a two person show of oil paintings by Patty Porter and drawings and photographs by Diane Newton. Porter’s paintings focus on local landscapes, many featuring paths that offer the viewer visual choices, perhaps suggesting metaphors for their personal experiences. Newton’s drawings are landscapes of Ithaca and the Boston area (“and then some”) and her photographs are part of her series What Rain and Darkness Can Reveal.

The show will open on September 30 and run until October 31. A reception will be held on Friday, October 1, from 5 until 8pm.

I’m trying to tell one possible story of this small swath of upstate New York—the Finger Lakes and the Southern Tier—as seen through my photographs. I want to see the big picture, to understand how things fit together. I like to imagine that this depiction of sad, beautiful upstate New York also represents the larger American scene.
